Commemoration of the date when slaves first heard about President Lincoln’s
1863 declaration of freedom. It symbolizes the joy of a call to freedom, and
the responsibility to assist in developing a more inclusive and equitable
society. African-American arts are one of the most compelling sources for
passing this message on.

Online Social Networks Go Mainstream
Not long
ago, Web sites like
MySpace,
Facebook,
YouTube, and
Second Life
were perceived as the domain of teenagers and college kids. Now,
online social networks are becoming a significant presence in the
digital life of a more mature Internet audience. A recent study by
Ipsos Insight found that one in five adults has visited a social
networking site. Some sites, such as
Growing Bolder
and Eons, cater
specifically to people 50 and older.

Nudge: Improving Decisions About Health, Wealth, and Happiness
by Richard H. Thaler
and
Cass R. Sunstein
Debit or credit? Paper or plastic?
Lease or buy? Public or private school? Have you made the right
choices? Probably not, according to the important new
research on the science of choice. In
clear and entertaining style, Nudge: Improving Decisions
About Health, Wealth, and Happiness provides a crash
course on how and why humans are prone to make bad choices, and
what we can do about it. Through dozens of eye-opening examples,
authors Richard Thaler and Cass Sunstein demonstrate how "choice
architecture"--a fancy term for the particular scenario or context
in which we are asked to make a decision--can actually nudge us
toward making better decisions. More importantly, the authors show
that by putting the right "nudges" in place, choice architects
(who range from cafeteria managers to divorce lawyers) can
substantially improve just about everything important to us, from
our retirement savings to the health of our planet, without
removing our range of options.

The Logic of
Life: The Rational Economics of an Irrational World
by Tim Harford
The Logic of Life
presents an X-ray image of human life, stripping away the surface
to show us a picture that is revealing, enthralling, and sometimes
disturbing. The stories that emerge are not about data or
equations but about people: the athlete who survived a shocking
murder attempt, the computer geek who beat the hard-bitten poker
pros, the economist who defied Henry Kissinger and faked an
invasion of Berlin, the king who tried to buy off a revolution.
Once you've read this quotable and addictive book, life will never
look the same again.
