BMW and Susan G. Komen for the Cure Select Linda Herold for Local Hero Award

BMW North Scottsdale and the Phoenix chapter of Susan G. Komen for the Cure selected Linda Herold as their Local Hero for the 12th Annual BMW Ultimate Drive®. Linda’s ongoing contributions locally in the fight against breast cancer were recognized at a special awards ceremony on Wednesday, May 14, at BMW North Scottsdale. The cross-country event will visit more than 200 BMW Centers nationwide in support of Susan G. Komen for the Cure. At each stop, BMW and the Komen Foundation honor one individual from the community who champions the breast cancer cause. The BMW Ultimate Drive® program is a national breast health outreach campaign in support of Susan G. Komen for the Cure. For each test mile driven in a BMW, $1 will be donated to the Komen Foundation on behalf of the driver. Participation is free and open to the public. BMW’s goal this year is to log up to 1 million miles – and raise $1 million to eradicate breast cancer. Susan G. Komen for the Cure® is the world’s largest and most proactive grassroots network fighting to end breast cancer forever.

Top 100 List
by Glenn Hamer

Three Arizona cities cracked the top 100 list of Fortune Magazine's "100 Best Places to Live and Launch 2008." Scottsdale, Oro Valley, and Prescott all made a showing, representing the central, southern, and northern parts of our great state.

Scottsdale ranked highest at 25, with the city's "pros" listed as a large entrepreneurial community, high volume of tourist traffic, and lots of culture and nightlife. Named "cons" are a relatively high cost of commercial space and lots of competition. The article cites Scottsdale's 2,200 small businesses and boasts of it bringing in $3.3 billion in five years to the revitalizing downtown center.

Oro Valley was featured in an earlier issue of Fortune as an up-and-coming location for the biotechnology industry. At #44 on the top 100 list, Oro Valley's population has increased by 25 percent since 2000. Fortune credits this increase in part because of a strongly pro-business local government and a high start-up business rate. With 83 new businesses licensed in 2007, they calculate that's two for every 1,000 inhabitants.

Prescott makes the list at 92. Fortune calls the city "ripe" for business startups in the tourism and service industries, as well as manufacturing. These industries can take advantage of Prescott's tax climate that includes: no sales tax on manufactured goods, no property tax on business inventories, and no tax on raw materials, finished products, or parts. Also a plus for manufacturing is the easy access to truck freight lines and interstates running through Arizona.

Like many Arizona locations, each of these cities is doing something right to make itself attractive to new and expanding businesses. Congratulations to these three Arizona cities for making our state a desirable business destination!
