5th Annual “State of Downtown!”

Invitation from Mayor Phil Gordon

It’s time for the 5th Annual “State of Downtown!”

Please join us on October 16th, 2008, from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. to celebrate an amazing year of progress. So much has changed downtown—The ASU/U of A Medical School, The new School of Journalism, 44 Monroe, light rail, CityScape…you need to see it for yourself. This year’s “State of Downtown” will be unlike any other you have experienced.

A welcoming reception will kick off an exciting evening. Enjoy live entertainment, drinks and hors d’oeuvres from downtown eateries. There will be extensive media and press coverage; we are expecting a record turnout of more than 800 people.

An amazing surprise awaits you!

Everyone who attends will receive a commemorative light rail coin to show my appreciation for your commitment to Downtown Phoenix. While I cannot tell you exactly what the night will bring, I promise you that you will have the “ride” of your life. Experience Downtown Phoenix and enjoy entertainment by local street performers, live music, and more.

As the nation’s 5th largest city, Phoenix will continue to grow by making a significant impact on our global economy, improving our mass transit, and by continuing to strengthen our local communities. With all the achievements we have made during the past year, we can look forward to many more successes as we continue to redefine Downtown.

Thank you for your dedication to making Downtown Phoenix a great place to live, work, play and experience all that a world-class city has to offer.

Here she is -- the USS New York

She was built with 24-tons of scrap steel from the World Trade Center.

Steel from the World Trade Center was melted down in a foundry in Amite, LA, to cast the ship's bow section. When it was poured into the molds on Sept 9, 2003, 'those big rough steelworkers treated it with total reverence,' recalled Navy Capt. Kevin Wensing, who was there. 'It was a spiritual moment for everybody there.'

Junior Chavers, foundry operations manager, said that when the trade center steel first arrived, he touched it with his hand and 'the hair on my neck stood up. It had a big meaning to it for all of us. They knocked us down. They can't keep us down. We're going to be back.'

The ship's motto? 'Never Forget'
