Understanding the way
the news media works

You have an announcement about hiring a new vice president, or the business’s anniversary celebration, or a grand re-opening after extensive remodeling.

Problem is, you’re not sure where to send the press release. If you fax or e-mail it to the major metro daily, will it even be seen, let alone printed? Is it something the broadcast media (television, radio) will give more than just a passing glance?

CLICK HERE for great information from Teri Carnicelli, Editor, North Central News.

The Women and Gender Studies Program in the new School of Social Transformation at Arizona State University is creating a new women’s leadership certificate course, taught primarily online. In keeping with ASU’s vision of being the university of the future, we want this program to be unique and exciting while meeting the needs of women leaders for excellent leadership development opportunities and a chance to build professional networks through both social media and personal contact. So we want your opinions.

We seek participants for a focus group discussion about the type of leadership program that would interest women leaders in business, government, and nonprofits. Participants will be paid $100 for approximately 2 hours, while helping ASU to design an outstanding program.

The focus group will be held on the ASU campus in Tempe on Wednesday, September 23 from 6-8 pm. Free parking in a garage and refreshments will be provided.

Please CLICK HERE (or on the link below) and answer a few questions about yourself, so that we can place you in the correct discussion group. If you can’t participate or choose not to, but know another woman leader in business, government, or nonprofit organization who might be interested, please feel free to pass this information along to her.

CHAMBER ANNOUNCES ATHENA FINALISTS

After a three-month nomination process and 50 Valley women nominated, the Greater Phoenix Chamber of Commerce announced the eleven women chosen as finalists for its prestigious ATHENA Awards. The ATHENA Businesswoman of the year award recognizes a woman in the public and private sector, in addition to highlighting an upcoming leader in the Valley as an ATHENA Young Professional. The finalists were announced at a special nominee reception Tuesday, Aug. 11 at the InterContinental Montelucia Resort & Spa in Paradise Valley.

Named after the Greek goddess of wisdom, the ATHENA Awards honor women who strive toward the highest levels of professional accomplishments, excel in their chosen field, and have devoted time and energy to their community. Nominees are judged on leadership and achievement, community service, and support for the professional development and mentorship of women.

Three ATHENA Award recipients will be announced at the Chamber’s 22nd Annual ATHENA Awards luncheon from 11:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 21, 2009, at the Arizona Biltmore Resort & Spa. To register visit www.phoenixchamber.com
